Missouri Waterfowl and Habitat Survey
Coordinated statewide surveys of Conservation Area wetlands and National Wildlife Refuges are conducted approximately every other week during the waterfowl season. They are normally conducted on Mondays, weather permitting, and reported on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

A winter storm moved through Missouri on January 1 that brought one to five inches of snow to northern Missouri, freezing rain to central Missouri, and rain to southern Missouri is what I wrote last year at this time. So what do I have to say for this year? A winter storm moved through Missouri on January 1 that brought two to six inches of snow to northern Missouri, freezing rain to central Missouri, and rain to southern Missouri; basically a repeat from last year! This marked the first winter storm of the year and came after an extremely mild December with many weather stations in Missouri reporting that December was one of the top five warmest on record. To provide perspective, in Columbia Missouri December temperatures were a degree warmer than an average November (Show Me Climate, Jan. 3, 2022).

North Missouri saw the first departure of ducks when a cold front moved through on December 20-21 and this was followed by the loss of more birds on December 28-30 with the passage of another cold front. After a winter storm on January 1, low temperatures fell below 0 in northwest Missouri and into the teens in southeast Missouri. These temperatures resulted in ice 3-6 inches thick on shallow water north and central Missouri, ice flows on the Missouri River extending as far south as Miami, Missouri by January 4, and thin ice in southeast Missouri. This most recent cold snap resulted in a significant departure of ducks from most state and federal refuges in Missouri with the exception of southeast Missouri where numbers remained similar to previous weeks.

The statewide tally for the week of January 3 was 481,414 ducks, 236,780 snow geese, 29,778 white-fronted geese, and 3,738 Canada geese. This duck count is 10% lower than last year, 5% lower than the previous five-year average, and 26% higher than the previous 20-year average for this time of year. Our estimate of 386,760 mallards is 8% lower than the previous five-year average and 22% higher than the previous 20-year average. Mallards comprised 80% of the total ducks compared to 78% last year, 83% for the previous 5-year average, and 83% for the previous 20-year average. These numbers are based on counts earlier in the week. Managers in north Missouri have reported the departure of more waterfowl since then.

Bald eagles often concentrate at state and federal refuges at this time of year following the waterfowl migration. Loess Bluffs count of 833 bald eagles shattered their previous record of 661 eagles observed on December 15, 2015. This likely is the highest count of eagles ever recorded in one place in Missouri.

The duck season is now closed in the North Zone and will close in the Middle Zone on January 9 and on January 31 in the South Zone. It’s always interesting to see how ducks change their behavior after the duck season closes and they no longer face hunting pressure. In the absence of hunting pressure, ducks often spread out and can be seen in places that you may not have seen them during the hunting season. For example, they may become less nocturnal, and you may see more mallards while goose hunting than you did recently during the duck season.

The goose seasons close on February 6 and the Light Goose Conservation Order begins on February 7. January often is the best month of the season for Canada geese and white-fronted geese, so there is still more hunting to be had.

This is the final Waterfowl and Habitat Survey Report of the season. I’d like to thank the state and federal refuge staff for providing counts this fall. Their passion and dedication to waterfowl and wetlands is truly remarkable!

Be safe, have fun, and good hunting!
