Missouri Waterfowl and Habitat Survey
Coordinated statewide surveys of Conservation Area wetlands and National Wildlife Refuges are conducted approximately every other week during the waterfowl season. They are normally conducted on Mondays, weather permitting, and reported on Thursdays.

Between the beginning of the month and Veteran’s Day, Missouri saw a large increase in duck numbers after some cooler weather to the north. Since then, much of the flyway has experienced low winds, little snow, and little precipitation, which has led to a smaller migration of birds compared to previous weeks.

Much of state is still receiving a below average amount of precipitation, leaving most of the good habitat to those areas with pumping capabilities.

Though area managers have not reported any more significant migrations, they are reporting an increase in the percentage of Mallards.The statewide tally for this week is 616,987 ducks, 18,900 snow geese,22,625 white-fronted geese, and 1,716 Canada geese. This weeks duck estimate is 1.1% lower than the previous five-year average of 624,054 ducks and 1.1% lower than the previous 20-year average of 624,145 ducks. Our estimate of 332,286 mallards is 18.6% lower than the previous five-year estimate of 408,057 mallards and 16.2% lower than the 20-year estimate of 396,468 mallards.
